He also noted that it’s completely fine to throw a regular bed pillow on top for extra support, as I do. Physiatrist Akhil Chhatre, MD, director of spine rehabilitation (among other roles) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, told me that there are no downsides to using a wedge, and that you don’t even need to wait until you’re having aches and pains: “It can make sense for anyone.” He noted that some very rare spinal conditions might not be compatible with a wedge, but generally most people can use one. Though I started using a wedge to help with breathing, it turns out that sleeping on a wedge can be better for your neck and back if you’re a side-sleeper or back-sleeper. Eventually I bought my first wedge-and I never looked back. A pile of regular pillows helped me breathe easier but gave me neck and back pain. Post-pregnancy, I discovered that I still needed extra support to breathe easier, to manage the reflux that never completely left, and to soothe my back after carrying around a toddler for chunks of the day. My husband started calling my side of the bed The Wall. It began with extra pillows stuffed under my head, between my knees, and under my ankles and then progressed to body pillows before culminating with this enormous U-shaped setup. To help relieve all the weird aches and pains that come with growing a human, I collected increasingly bigger pillows as my body grew larger. ![]() When I was pregnant with my daughter (who’s about to turn 11), my pillow needs radically changed. (I’ve used the Nest Easy Breather Pillow, one of our picks, for this purpose for years.) Although I’ve tried many wedges, and I prefer this InteVision wedge, you might like a different one based on your anatomy and sleep position. I treat mine as an extension of my mattress-like a budget version of an adjustable bed-and plop a regular pillow on top of it. Because they elevate the entire upper body, wedge pillows are particularly good for people with sleep apnea, acid reflux, or other conditions where elevating the head helps you breathe easier. ![]() These huge pillows are typically made of a triangular piece of polyurethane foam with a 1- to 2-inch layer of memory foam on top for extra padding. I know better than most people that there isn’t one perfect pillow for everybody, but my personal can’t-live-without-it choice is actually a 2-by-2-foot wedge of solid foam. ![]() I’ve been writing about bed pillows at Wirecutter for five years now, and I’ve tested dozens upon dozens of pillows. ![]() ![]() Use the shredding disc (shredding side facing UP) to shred cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and cheese. I can make other suggestions, but I think this is a good start. I don't have a double from them (I have a triple), but generally they just feel slightly chonkier. The only good plastic triple I've found has gotten so expensive that an ICO might be a better option now.įor ICO, their prices are affordable but they instruments seem heavier to me. STL's plastic triple isn't NEARLY as good as their double. Both the Songbird and Zelda ceramic doubles are ok, but kinda meh. The STL plastic double for $40 is a good deal and if you can find one, go for it if you don't want to spend a lot of money. For STL, I prefer the purple clay double over any of their other offerings (and over the Focalink doubles). You may be able to get one cheaper on the Focalink website too, but watch the shipping charges. With Songbird, I suggest sticking with the Focalink doubles. Also, I'm not sure if they are actively offered so you'll have to contact him. Hind's transverse doubles require softer breath than the Night by Noble and will cost a good bit more than others. I haven't tried any of his newer ones, but completely trust Spencer's sensibilities and integrity. Spencer is going to most likely require a wait, as his ocarinas are in high demand and he had a production setback (but has recovered) a few months ago. If you're willing to order internationally, then the options open up a good bit. If you're in the US, then you've got Spencer, Hind, Songbird, STL, and Imperial City Ocarinas - if you don't want to order internationally. I mostly play my 11 hole Oberon AC, so take all this with a grain of salt if you need advice from someone that is heavily into multis. The truth is, I don't play multis much anymore. It could be why I go for my TNG purple clay when I go for a multi. I do wish there was a matte finish version. So in short any ocarina from songbird or STL or some other proper ocarina store will give you great quality and a proper instrument, even if the one you will buy is zelda themed.Takashi would be my suggestion if you want a nice round pure tone. If you wish to see it so you can get a better look at their quality in a "real world" lighting (specifically for the ocarina of time replica) here is the link! In it I also show the ocarina of time replica I have from them. I recently got my second songbird ocarina last month and made an unboxing video. BUT I have seen many videos of them and their sound seems to be just as good as songbird. I never had any ocarinas from STL, for me I'm just not a big fan of how their ocarinas look. Plus the quality is fantastic, and i know this because I have two ocarinas from them. I personally recommend songbird, but that's because I like how creative they are and the passion they put in their work. And these stores have so many ocarinas that are not based on zelda since you know, ocarinas are actual instruments that have been around for at least centuries. ![]() If you buy an ocarina from a propper ocarina store like songbird or STL, you should expect to have good quality. Just because the design is zelda based doesn't make it bad. It's a ceramic ocarina with 12 holes and in the alto c tuning. It's honestly the best replica I've seen for it. I've had a songbird ocarina of time replica for like 8 or so years. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Street noise is the epitome of distraction: constant random sounds like construction, cars whizzing by, people talking, horns honking - all with almost no predictability. There’s a big, bulbous dashboard, with not a whole lot of, well … anything, outside of the angular air vents. So what do I mean when I say it’s really depends on your priorities? I would say that the seat base could be a little longer, for me personally. The seats themselves are also pretty comfortable. Sure, you can tug at the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, or toggle into Sport driving mode, but the Corolla Cross Hybrid feels better as laidback transport. It’s right down the middle of the class, mild-mannered and predictable in operation. The Cross rides well, with no real leanings towards engagement or pampering. If anything, there’s a bigger difference between the base S and XSE, on account of the smaller, 17-inch wheels and the taller sidewalls. An engineer says it’s a slightly stiffer setup, but unless you’re hopping back and forth between the two, it’s unnoticeable. As the quote-unquote sporty model of the family, the Hybrid has what Toyota calls a sport-tuned suspension. So the Hybrid has decent power, you’ve got steering that feels more or less the same as the Corolla Cross. Foot to the floor for highway merging, the CC Hybrid gets the job done with a bit of noise. Like we mentioned earlier, the D-loop makes for smooth and painless adjusting so you can tighten or loosen the strap depending on what feels most comfortable. The strap itself also has some soft, cushy padding and a mesh lining on the underside that doesn’t dig into the chest and keeps the air flowing. The shoulder strap is attached just below one of the top corners of the bag which we’ve found allows it to sit more comfortable over the shoulder than some other larger slings we’ve tested in the past. The D-loop on the shoulder strap in particular has made for easy adjusting throughout testing, and the buckle hasn’t given us any trouble yet, either. In addition, hibernating animals do not show periods of rapid eye movement (REM), the stage of sleep associated with dreaming in humans.īears, which many people think of as the classic hibernating animals, are actually just deep sleepers, and do not significantly lower their metabolism and body temperature. Hibernation differs from sleep in that a hibernating animal shows a drastic reduction in metabolism, or its rate of energy usage, and arouses relatively slowly, while a sleeping animal decreases its metabolism only slightly, and can wake up almost instantly if disturbed. Many animals sleep more often when food is scarce, but only a few truly hibernate. Hibernating animals use 70 to 100 times less energy than when active, allowing them to survive until food is once again plentiful. Hibernation is an important adaptation to harsh climates, because when food is scarce, an animal may use up more energy maintaining its body temperature and in foraging for food than it would receive from consuming the food. A similar state, known as estivation, occurs in some desert animals during the dry months of summer. Hibernation is a state of inactivity, or torpor, in which an animal ’s heart rate, body temperature, and breathing rate are decreased in order to conserve energy through the cold months of winter.
